Description
Base painting of the vintage movie poster for ''Bringing Up Baby'', a 1938 American screwball comedy film directed by Howard Hawks, starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. The film is considered one of the classic examples of the screwball comedy genre and is renowned for its fast-paced dialogue, slapstick humor, and sparkling chemistry between its leads.
The story revolves around David Huxley, a mild-mannered paleontologist played by Cary Grant, who becomes entangled in a series of misadventures after meeting the free-spirited heiress Susan Vance, portrayed by Katharine Hepburn. When Susan's pet leopard, Baby, escapes, she enlists David's help in recapturing the animal, leading to a whirlwind of comedic escapades and misunderstandings.
Cary Grant delivers a brilliant comedic performance as the befuddled David Huxley, showcasing his impeccable timing and flair for physical comedy. Katharine Hepburn shines as the irrepressible Susan Vance, bringing charm, wit, and sophistication to the role. Their on-screen chemistry is electric, and their rapid-fire banter adds to the film's comedic appeal.
"Bringing Up Baby" is celebrated for its witty screenplay, penned by Dudley Nichols and Hagar Wilde, which is filled with clever wordplay and absurd situations. Director Howard Hawks' deft handling of the material ensures that the film maintains a brisk pace and a sense of chaotic energy from start to finish.
The film's supporting cast, including actors like Charles Ruggles, May Robson, and Walter Catlett, contribute memorable performances that complement the antics of Grant and Hepburn. Additionally, the inclusion of a leopard as a central plot device adds an element of unpredictability and danger to the proceedings.
"Bringing Up Baby" was not a commercial success upon its initial release but has since become recognized as a classic of American cinema. Its influence can be seen in subsequent screwball comedies and romantic comedies, and it continues to delight audiences with its timeless humor and charm.

About the artist:
Bernard Lancy (1892—1964) was a French film poster artist. He designed posters for about 20 years, from the 1930s to about 1950. Among his most famous posters was one from 1939, "La Grande Illusion." In 1940 he was selected to do a Japanese version of "The Philadelphia Story." For the film "Joan of Arc" (1948), he painted at least four different designs used for its posters.
Bernard Lancy turns poster movies into advertising masterpieces. His works are completely different from the realism and truthfulness of many colleagues; they incorporate caricature, geometries, patterns, and colorful drawing. The originality of this designer's style lies in his ability to integrate various languages, creating mixed compositions, sometimes loud in their integration of characters, texts, frames, and colors. Lancy keeps himself in joyful balance, moving between different elements.
